Why I Want an iPhone
So Apple released their iPhone yesterday at MacWorld.
First of all, you should click on the link and check out what the device can do; it can do some amazing things. It has one button and a huge 3.5″ multi-touch screen in which the software on the phone (full version of OS X apparently) completely replaces the hardware of a standard mobile phone. It's an iPod, phone, camera and internet navigator all in one. You can listen to your tunes, set your tunes as ringtones, take photos, set your photos as wallpaper, navigate the internet and send and recieve email all on one device.
But it's a smartphone, why do you want one?
You all might or might not know that I am against owning a smartphone. Why is that? Well, current smartphones are horrible. They're hard to use and frankly I don't want to mess with that when most of what I am going to do with a phone is place phone calls. It irritates me that I have to have a camera on my phone because that's the only way they come.
Why do I want one?
With the iPhone being a smartphone that does all the things I do not want my phone to do, why do I want to own one? Well, the main reason is simple.
Usability.
The user interface is amazing and I don't have to use my thumbs, thumbsticks, scroll wheels or any other hard-to-use-when-small means to navigate the software. It's usable and that's what's missing in standard smartphones.
I also want to own one because of the high technology included in the very small and sleek box and it's built on my favorite operating system, OS X.
Sadly the phone isn't released until June, which means I have to wait until then to get one, but the good news is that it's only going to be available to Cingular — my phone service provider. So come June, I will have saved up enough dough to purchase one of these devices the day they're launched.
That's really all I wanted to write about today.

I saw the release yesterday and it looks very nice… but i don’t think i will ever own one. There are three problems for me… price (which is insane), the fact that it’s only available via Cingular (you couldn’t drag me kicking and screaming away from Verizon), and it’s a totally closed system (sure it’s OS X… but if i can’t run any of my own apps on it… what’s the use?). BTW there is some good info on these sites about this stuff

Yea, I’ve been reading what those sites have to say about it since its release (yay google reader). Regardless of what they’re saying, I still want one. I don’t really need it to run my own apps, but I’m sure there will be some hacking that will take place post-release.
As for the price, I’ve been wanting to get another digital organizer that I can sync with my calendar, read email and browse the web on, but I haven’t found one that I like. By June, my current phone will be ready to be replaced (the screen is becoming less and less readable and the phone’s audio isn’t half as good as when I bought it) so I would normally be dropping about $200 on a phone and if I want to get an organizer, I’ll probably drop about that on one. That’s about $400 already, so for convenience of having both in one package, the extra $99 is worth it.

Personally, I would absolutely love to have an iPhone (assuming that’s what they will be called…..), but since they aren’t going to be available for other cell networks until 2009, I think I’ll wait it out…
